A passionate request for help please ...
By Abbie Stewart, 09 February 2017 –
I’m passionate about helping young people to achieve … to support them to be the very best they can be. There is nothing like being responsible for igniting a spark in the mind of a young person … a spark that helps them realise they can be more than they believed possible just a moment before. This passion has lead me to be involved with the NCS programme through Warrington Youth Club, to become a non-exec on the board of the Preston Vocational Centre and to work with the DofE in support of their fabulous awards schemes which were 60 years old in 2016 … their Diamond Year.
Those of you who know me know that I’m particularly terrified of two things … heights and enclosed spaces. Which is why I’ve decided to challenge myself for the DofE Diamond Challenge by completing a ropes course underground in a disused mine (Zipworld Cavern), before taking on the longest zip wire in Europe, and the fastest in the world (Zipworld Velocity) where I will travel at speeds over 100mph, face down, over a drop of 500 feet.
Obviously I’m funding the challenge myself but it gives me the opportunity to bring the wonderful work done by the DofE for thousands of young people every year to the attention of friends and colleagues alike.
The Diamond Challenge is meant to be just that, a challenge, and this certainly will be for me. If you'd like to sponsor me to help transform the lives of vulnerable young people (and spur me on to be brave) I will be very grateful.
I’m doing the Diamond Challenge with my daughter Abbie, who is just as frightened of both drops and enclosed spaces as I am (supported by my other, braver, daughter Lauren) and our Just Giving page can be found at:
Many thanks for your interest and your support.
